The High Atlas is a hilly area near Marrakech that runs for nearly a hundred kilometers from southwest to northeast. Large transverse troughs cut through the northern slope. Every year, the summits stay snow-covered for several months. The difference between the two slopes is pretty noticeable. The north, which is more humid, has lovely trees, but the south is arid, desolate, and already has a Saharan feel to it. The At Bouguemez Valley, perhaps one of the most beautiful in the Central High Atlas, has just recently become more accessible. This broad and level valley is great for a family outing.
Our program is particularly intended for a trip with small children. A riding mule allows them to rest if required. We encourage you to explore the Ait Bouguemez Valley, away from the rush of contemporary life. It follows the seasons gently, creating a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors, traditional mud-brick home architecture, and breathtaking Atlas scenery, affording a true view into the complex existence of Berber peasants.
This program is available from May to October.
Arrival at the Menara Airport in Marrakech. Welcome and support are provided. Return to the hotel. Dinner and an overnight stay in a hotel.
Early in the morning, go for the High Atlas and the town of Azilal. A stunning descent falls to the Ait Abbas Valley after passing the Arbar Pass at 2200 meters. Cross a second mountain to reach the At Bouguemez Valley, also known as "Happy Valley." Stay in a guesthouse in the village of Ikhf n-ighir. Take a little stroll around the village to get a first glimpse of the valley. Dinner and a night at a guesthouse are included.
A day spent visiting the valley: lush tiny farms painstakingly farmed by Berbers, various irrigation canals, and women engaged in traditional occupations.
Cross the Tizrigaine plateau, then follow the course of the Ait Ouriate River to locate the high plateau herders. After passing through the Imi Nounmer Gorges, you will arrive to the Ahbbak Valley, which is situated at the foot of gorgeous mountains. Lunch should be taken near a spring. In the afternoon, return to the guesthouse.
After touring the valley, take a mule ride to Lake Izourar, which is tucked between Mount Waougoulzat and Azourki. This lake is important to the Ait Atta nomads. Begin with an Adazn mountain crossing to reach the other side of the "Happy Valley." Set up tent at Rbat Village beside the spring. Tents are used for sleeping.
