There are journeys that you take, and then there are journeys that take you. A 10-day odyssey through Morocco is firmly the latter. It's a voyage that weaves through the annals of history, from the grandeur of four Imperial Cities to the profound silence of the Sahara. This is a story of shifting landscapes, where fortified kasbahs rise from the earth, lush oases provide sudden bursts of life, and sand dunes change their hue with every passing hour. Prepare to be captivated by a unique contrast of colors, cultures, and timeless traditions.
Your Moroccan adventure begins the moment you land in Casablanca, the nation's vibrant commercial capital and largest port. After a brief tour of this bustling metropolis, we journey to Rabat, the country's immaculate capital. The afternoon is a deep dive into history, exploring the Medina's stone-and-whitewashed buildings with their grand, dark-wood studded doors. You'll stand in awe of the Hassan Tower, an intricate stone minaret that dominates the skyline, and visit the serene Mohammed V Mausoleum, home to the onyx tomb of the late king. The tour concludes with a view of the Michouar ramparts that encircle the Royal Palace before settling in for the night.
After breakfast, we set out for the imperial city of Meknes. Here, you'll explore the 17th-century old city and marvel at Bab el Mansour, a monumental gate that serves as its grand entrance. The journey then takes a turn back in time as we arrive at the Roman ruins of Volubilis. This is Morocco's most beautiful archaeological site, a sprawling city of mosaics, temples, and a triumphant arch that still stands against the sky. Before reaching our final destination, we pass through the holy village of Moulay Idriss, named for the founder of Morocco's first indigenous Islamic kingdom. The day ends in Fes, where we'll dine and rest, anticipating the wonders to come.
Today is dedicated entirely to Fes, a city that doesn't give up its secrets easily. To truly know Fes is to enter its sacred heart. As the Sufis have long called it, Fes is a sanctuary (Zaouia), a city founded by the patron saint Moulay Idriss. We'll spend the day exploring its historic monuments and bustling souks.
"Fes does not reveal itself easily. To access it, one must enter through the great gate, both visible and veiled, of the sacred. For Fes is a sanctuary."
Our exploration takes us into Fes El Bali, the largest and most captivating medina in Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1976. Its labyrinthine alleys lead to a multitude of historical wonders, including the Attarine and Bou Inania Medersas—masterpieces of Moorish art. We'll see the Nejjarine fountain, visit the holy Moulay Idriss Mausoleum, and glimpse the famous Karaouine Mosque, the oldest university in the Arab-Islamic world. The day is a sensory feast, from the colorful spice stalls of Souk El Attarine to the ancient craftsmanship on display throughout the city.
Leaving the imperial city behind, our journey today takes us south towards the desert. We'll travel through Midelt, enjoying spectacular views of the High Atlas mountain peaks, and pass through Er-Rachidia, a modern urban center. From there, the landscape transforms as we drive directly to Merzouga. Here, you will trade modern comforts for a truly authentic nomadic experience: a night spent in a traditional Berber tent, nestled among the dunes. As night falls, the sky opens up to reveal a breathtaking canopy of thousands of stars, a sight of pure magic.
We'll wake before dawn to witness the incredible spectacle of a desert sunrise, as light slowly washes over the Merzouga dunes, painting them in shifting shades of gold and orange. After this unforgettable moment, our journey continues. We'll visit the hilltop fort of Bordj East in Erfoud and then travel to Tinghir to explore the Todra Gorges, Morocco's own Grand Canyon with its spectacular sheer pink walls. The road to Ouarzazate is a journey in itself, taking us through the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs," passing the rose-scented town of Kelaat M'Gouna and Boumalne, which overlooks the stunning Dades Valley. We arrive in Ouarzazate in the evening.
After breakfast, we explore Ouarzazate, a striking blend of oases, desert, and kasbahs, often called the "Hollywood of Morocco." We'll visit the impressive Kasbah of Taourirt before departing for the legendary Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified village, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a breathtaking example of southern Moroccan architecture. After a stop for mint tea, we continue our journey towards Marrakech. Known as the "Ochre City," this vibrant imperial hub is an essential stop. Upon arrival, you'll check into your hotel for the night.
For a truly memorable night, consider the Fantasia show at the famous "Chez Ali" restaurant. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under Berber tents, accompanied by folkloric groups, musicians, and a thrilling horse-riding spectacle.
The entire day is devoted to exploring Marrakech, the second oldest imperial city, famously known as the "Pearl of the South." Founded in the 11th century, its history is rich and palpable. Our tour includes the city's most iconic landmarks: the Koutoubia Minaret, a masterpiece of Almohad architecture; the opulent Bahia Palace, a stunning example of Moroccan craftsmanship with its intricate gardens and 150 lavishly decorated rooms; and the historic Saadian Tombs, discovered in 1917 after centuries of being sealed. We'll also see the ruins of the Badi Palace, once a lavish complex of gold, jade, and marble. The day culminates at the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square, a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, where you can shop, relax, and soak in the incredible atmosphere of storytellers, musicians, and performers.
Today we take a day trip to the coast, traveling to the charming port city of Essaouira. This small coastal town boasts a beautiful medina, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected by impressive ramparts that stand against the Atlantic winds and waves. Smaller and more relaxed than Marrakech, Essaouira's medina offers a wonderful variety of local crafts, especially items made from Thuya wood and silver. A highlight is the bustling fishing port, where a fleet of bright blue boats bobs in the harbor. Here, you can enjoy a delicious lunch of freshly caught seafood. After exploring the port with its bronze cannons and wandering the straight, French-designed streets, we will return to Marrakech for the night.
